Meet Keynote Speaker Bernie James

In August we announced that Dr. Bernard James is our keynote speaker for the 2017 school safety conference. For those not familiar with Bernie, here’s a little bit about him…

  • Professor Bernard James teaches courses in Civil Rights, Federalism, Individual Rights, First Amendment, Education Law and State Constitutional Law. He joined the Pepperdine faculty in 1984 after serving in Michigan as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Judge Myron Wahls for the Court of Appeals.
  • Professor James is the author of the textbook Education Policy and the Law: Cases and Commentary. He serves as a senior consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice where he published Sharing Information: A Guide to FERPA and Participation in Juvenile Justice Programs.
  • Professor James specializes in constitutional matters, serving as the First Amendment Contributing Editor on the ABA Preview Journal, which reviews the cases of the United States Supreme Court. He is also serves as a contributor and editor to the NASRO Journal of School Safety. He lectures in America and Canada on legal issues and serves as a constitutional law commentator for the national and local media.
  • As an educator, Bernie LOVES speaking to fellow educators as well as cops. With our recent explosion of non-sworn/school district attendees, now is the perfect time to bring him to town.
  • His presentations are interactive, so be sure to bring your legal questions and scenarios to share with the group. We’re going to work through them together.
  • While Dr. James will bring his national expertise to our conference, his presentation will be tailored for Oregon statutes and case law.

This presentation is not to be missed. Bernie will be teaching all day on Monday July 31st.
